Next Steps
Now that you have registered to Walk to Cure Diabetes; created your personal webpage and
sent out your fundraising letters, what’s next?
1. Follow up is key
Be considerate, but remember that people are busy and may need a little nudge. Share a reminder on why you are raising money for diabetes research. Give people a deadline for submitting a donation. Tell everyone how the fundraising is going and how close you are to your goal, and remind them that it’s not too late to contribute. This little reminder can clinch your success!
2. Face-to Face Conversations Seal the Deal
Just like everything that goes along with type 1 diabetes, sometimes raising funds to find the cure gets exhausting! Families who have participated in the letter writing campaign for several years may feel that they have “said all there is to say”! We hear you. But consider this, if we don’t ask, we don’t get. We are in our families/friends giving calendars, and even when WE get tired of asking, we have to give them the opportunity to donate. Here are some tips from Letter Writing Campaign Pros to keep it fresh: Wrap-around events make it fun, and can tie into your letter. If you are holding a carwash, or a yard sale, tell people about it in your letter. Ask them to “buy” a virtual carwash, cup of lemonade, leisure suit (or other yard sale prize!) with an online donation.
3. Matching Gifts Double Your Efforts
Find out if your company has a matching gift program. Always remember to ask your sponsors whether or not their companies will match their donations. See if your company offers a match program at www.matchinggifts.com/jdrf.
4. Ask Where You Shop, ‘Til You Drop
Ask the businesses you frequent for a donation—such as your grocer, hair stylist, dry cleaner, doctor, gym, coffee shop, and favorite restaurant. Order paper sneakers that stores can sell for $1 to benefit your Walk team.
5. Donor Amounts—Think Big, Get Big Results
Don’t undersell your cause and your efforts! Any size donation is great, but if you ask for too small of an amount, people will limit their giving. Try saying “I am asking 10 of my friends for $10 – can you make a donation to fund diabetes research?” Or if you are fundraising online, ask someone who you think will make a larger donation to let you list it on your fundraising webpage – people will see that example and follow suit!
