First Steps
Getting started is as easy as 1 - 2 - 3
1. Visit www.walk.jdrf.org to register for the Walk to Cure Diabetes.
2. Visit www.walk.jdrf,org and create your own personal webpage that prospective donors can view. Set your fundraising goal and track your progress. Make it personal by adding photos. Make a personal donation so others will know you are committed.
3. Online fundraising is Oh So Easy. Visit Walk Central and create a personal fundraising letter by describing your Walk effort and its importance to finding cures for diabetes. Include:
- Your personal goal
- Why you are walking to cure diabetes and asking for donations
- If you have a diabetes connection, discuss how diabetes has affected you
- If you don’t have a diabetes connection, ask a Chapter staff member for a Child Ambassador’s story
- How the donation will help JDRF’s funding of diabetes research
- Include a link to your personal fundraising page or give other ways they can contribute
Upload your e-mail list and send out your customized e-letters inviting your contacts to make an online credit card contribution.
Sometimes a personalized and stamped letter can work magic. Remember, not everyone has email, so you may have some great potential donors who need to receive your formal solicitation letter. Use the format that makes the most sense but be sure to send your letter to everyone you know including friends, family members, co-workers, class mates, relatives, and everyone on your holiday list. Send your fundraising letter to the businesses you frequent —such as your grocer, hair stylist, dry cleaner, doctor, gym, coffee shop, and favorite restaurant. You never know who may have a personal diabetes connection!

Date
Dear (Name):
On (Walk date), I will be walking in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes. My personal fund raising goal is $__________. I would appreciate your support by making a donation to sponsor me. Your support will help JDRF find cures for diabetes and it’s complications through the support of research.
Since there are 24 million Americans affected by diabetes, I believe that walking with JDRF is important and well worth the effort. I am particularly proud of the fact that since it’s founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008.
I hope you will consider sponsoring my participation in this event; any amount will help. Donations may be made on-line and are tax deductible. Many employers match the charitable donations of employees so be sure to check with your HR Department to see if your donation could be doubled!
Thank you for consideration. If you have any questions about the Walk to Cure Diabetes, or the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, please visit www.jdrf.org.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
