Hello East Bay Walkers!
Walk day has come and gone, and wow, what a wonderful time we had!
More than 2,000 dedicated walkers and JDRF supporters took time out of their busy schedules to walk and fundraise for a cause near and dear to all of us -- finding a cure for diabetes.
Sunday's walkers enjoyed perfect California weather, a pleasant stroll and lots of delicious food and great music.
Special thanks to our leadership team for putting on another fabulous walk -- East Bay Walk Chair Stan Pachura, of PMI Group; Corporate Walk Chair Heather Mason, president of Abbott Diabetes Care; and JDRF staff partner Luis Gonzales.
While we all had a fantastic time on walk day, our work is far from done. Our wonderful family and corporate teams and sponsors have brought in $688,744 for JDRF and diabetes research. That's money we have in the bank, plus funds that have been committed to us.
While $688,744 is a spectacular amount, it's quite a ways from our $750,000 goal.
Don't fret. We still have plenty of time to meet our goals, both as walk teams and as the East Bay community. We have until June 2010, the end of the fiscal year, to reach our lofty goal.
Here's how you can help. Send a post-walk letter -- by e-mail or snail mail -- to all of your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and other acquaintances. Tell them how much fun you had at the walk. Remind them of your team goal and urge them, ever so nicely, to continue to make donations. Be sure to include the link to your fundraising page to make online giving super easy.
Another good way to bring in a few bucks before the year ends is to include a polite plea in your holiday cards and letters. Again, be sure to include the link to your fundraising page.
Your online fundraising pages will remain active until Jan. 30, 2010. Donations turned in on walk day should be posted on your online fundraising pages within two weeks.
Remind people to ask employers for matching funds. It's an easy way for donors to double their donations. Click here for info about matching funds, including a search to find companies that provide matching funds.
Remind folks that all donations are 100 percent tax deductible. Even in this punk economy, some people need to make charitable donations to improve their tax returns.
If you weren't able to make it to walk day, it's not too late to take part. You can register for another Bay Area walk and create an online fundraising page. If you can't make it to a walk, we urge you to at least do some online fundraising. Go to walk.jdrf.org to register for a walk and/or set up a fundraising page.
When the day comes that we finally have a cure for diabetes, you and your supporters can hold your heads high and proclaim, "I helped cure diabetes!"
Way to go, walkers!
