About the Walk to Cure Diabetes
There are 24 million people living with diabetes in the United States today with 720,000 people living with diabetes right here is the Bay Area. Did you know that every 30 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes? Diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and without warning. People living with diabetes need to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times per day – every day for the rest of their lives.
Did you know that a person with type 1 diabetes must tests their blood glucose many times throughout the day and also give themselves insulin injections and together this could equal 5,000 needle sticks in a typical year? Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Unfortunately, more children and adults will be diagnosed with diabetes this year than last year.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the world’s largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF to find cures for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF research focuses on all aspects and stages of the disease: stopping its progression, reversing diabetes in adults and young adults, avoiding complications and preventing diabetes in those at-risk to develop the disease.
The Walk to Cure Diabetes is JDRF’s largest fundraiser with more than 200 walk locations across the country and five here in the Bay Area. Did you know that the when all 200 walks have been completed this year that when combined Walk to Cure Diabetes will have raised $92 million? A cure is now within reach thanks to Walk to Cure Diabetes.
The pace of diabetes research progress has been dramatic. This is evident in a number of ways. JDRF is funding more research in more different areas of science, than ever before. We are funding more science involving treatments and cures being tested in people than ever before. And large health care companies are now taking JDRF-funded science and creating clear pathways to bring those cures and therapies to market in the near term. Did you know that JDRF currently funds 42 human clinical trials?
Research is accelerating toward treatments and cures more quickly than ever before. We all feel a sense of urgency and that provides a compelling reason to register for the Walk to Cure Diabetes 2009 and to work harder than ever for the funds needed for research. Did you know that researchers working on JDRF’s artificial pancreas project believe they are just a few years away from a nearly carefree way for people with diabetes to monitor blood and inject insulin? It is imperative that we maintain strong research momentum and follow up on the progress made in the past few years.
The Walk to Cure Diabetes are communities working together to raise funds for diabetes research in a fun, family-oriented healthy activity that builds camaraderie. It's an event you will feel good about. The Walk to Cure Diabetes fuels the research that will find cures diabetes. Together, we will be known as the people who cured diabetes.
